Summer is coming. It has been for a while, although it has had moments of hesitation. Now however it, the summer I mean, has just about gathered itself together and it feels like it might produce a concentrated front from now on.
We, in our caravan life, are determined to beat the heat. There is the need to have a plan or else the ambiance of the caravan will be ruined by a hot, fierce season. No one wants to live for very long in a sweltering tin can.
We have however lived in this tin can long enough to develop a hot day plan. Last summer taught us a lot. We are insulated so we know the inside of the caravan can be cool and it is up to us to retain this coolness through the hot days. We no longer take off the front cover. This means it is a bit darker and we can’t see out the front, but no matter as there are side windows to gaze out. It also means a little less fuss when we move on, as the cover is already in place. This part of the plan has made a difference. We can’t look out but the sun can’t beam in.
Covering the skylights on a hot day is also part of the plan. It works. It is dark inside but the strength of the sun is diminished. By opening the windows and door the breeze wafts in and around. The temperature in the caravan can be kept at ‘cool’. It might be scorching outside but we are happy, content and often snoring in our dark sanctuary.
A plan is however needed for a hot northerly wind when camped on a gravel site. Any ideas to beat the hot, gravelly sand coming in would be appreciated.
You’re not alone with the problem of overheating. Our house gets all day sun from various angles through the day and by evening, even with the doors and windows open, it can be a bit suffocating. Sitting on the deck or spending time in the garden is my personal escape. If we’re truly cooked then we head to the local pool. In your case I imagine there are nice outdoor spaces nearby, or an air conditioned public library or cafe. Home is just for eating and sleeping.
