Freedom

We have been living in a caravan for over two years now. We have unshackled ourselves from the mortgage, the house, rates and suburbia, but are we free. Friends tell us we are living the dream. Surely this must mean we are free.

Free from what though. We sometimes still have cranky neighbours. We still have household chores and bills to pay. We are still bound together with the intricacies of marriage. So not free really.

But there is something different existing like this, caravan and not house. It is hard to put my finger on it but possibly it is because it feels like we are permanently camping. The plates are enamel and my shoes are sandles. The shower is across the way and doing the washing is a communal activity.

On the whole we are surrounded daily, even if we shift along each day, with positive people. People smile and wave as we drive in. They ask if we need help when the awning blows off. They give airy ‘hellos’ as they walk to the loos. They are in the ‘holiday mood’. It puts us in the ‘holiday mood’.

So I think what we have achieved is not freedom exactly but more the minimisation of life pressures.
